The aim of Natural Product Research is to publish important contributions in the field of natural product chemistry. In order to be published in the shortest possible time, manuscripts are invited in camera ready state. The journal covers all aspects of research in the chemistry and biochemistry of naturally occurring compounds. The communications include coverage of work on natural substances of land and sea and of plants, microbes and animals. Discussions of structure elucidation, synthesis and experimental biosynthesis of natural products as well as developments of methods in these areas are welcomed in the journal. Finally, research papers in fields on the chemistry-biology boundary, eg. fermentation chemistry, plant tissue culture investigations etc., are accepted into the journal. The current impact factor is 0.527.

    ABSTRACT: Re-investigation of the EtOH extract of the aerial parts of Kleinia odora led to the isolation of two new triterpenes; klodorone A (3) and klodorol A (4), together with two known compounds: β-amyrin (1) and germanicol (2), which were reported from this plant for the first time. Their structures were determined by using extensive 1D ((1)H, (13)C and DEPT) and 2D ((1)H-(1)H COSY, HMQC and HMBC) NMR and mass spectral measurements in addition to comparison of their data with the literature.

    ABSTRACT: Chemical investigation of the Red Sea sponge Dragmacidon coccinea led to the isolation of a new nucleoside, dragmacidoside (1), along with eight known compounds: adenosine (2), inosine (3), deoxycytidine (4), methyl-α-d-glucopyranoside (5), clionasterol (6), stigmasterol (7), campesterol (8) and brassicasterol (9). The compounds were isolated from chloroform and ethyl acetate fractions of the methanolic extract of the sponge, and their structures were established based on various spectroscopic data including MS, 1D and 2D NMR (COSY, HSQC and HMBC). Biological testing revealed that the chloroform fraction possesses significant anti-inflammatory activity in the carrageenan-induced hind paw oedema in rats.

    ABSTRACT: From the n-BuOH-soluble fraction of a MeOH extract of the fruits of Rosa soulieana, one new phenolic glucoside (1) was isolated along with five known compounds, comprising two lignin glycosides, two flavonoid glycosides and a phenolic glycoside. The chemical structure of the new compound was elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analyses, including ESI-MS, UV, IR, (1)H and (13)C NMR, DEPT and 2D NMR (HSQC and HMBC). All the isolated compounds were evaluated for their antioxidant activity by using ABTS (2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzoline-6-sulfonic acid)) assay. Among these compounds, 1, 3 and 6 exhibited strong scavenging activity in ABTS(√+)(SC50 = 102.10, 193.85, 65.38 μmol/L, respectively) compared with the positive control l-ascorbic acid (Vc) (SC50 = 117.16 μmol/L).

    ABSTRACT: A Satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu Marc. cv. Miyagawa) spontaneous mutant, Shinheungri, produces fruit with an abnormal red-coloured peel during ripening. The peel and pulp extracts of Shinheungri fruit were evaluated for polyphenolic contents and antioxidant activities by using various in vitro assays. Compared with those of wild type (WT), Shinheungri exhibited slightly higher total flavonoid content and antioxidant activities. The results of UPLC analyses indicate that the peel and pulp extracts of Shinheungri fruit were rich in mainly hesperidin, and they had different flavonoid composition. The present data on Shinheungri revealed a potential source of powerful flavonoids for further detailed phytochemical investigation.

    ABSTRACT: Acorus calamus L., a tall, perennial, grass-like monocot plant from the Acoraceae family, is a well-known plant in Indian traditional medicines for centuries. It is a highly valued herb as it acts as a rejuvenator for brain and nervous system. It is a main medhya drug, which has the property of improving the memory power and intellect. Rhizomes of the plant are widely used in the treatment of number of ailments such as epilepsy, mental ailments, chronic diarrhoea, dysentery, fever, abdominal tumours, kidney and liver troubles, and rheumatism. A. calamus leaves, rhizomes and its essential oil possess many biological activities such as antispasmodic, carminative and are compiled in a simple approach in this review. This review presents a pragmatic description that deals with chemical constituents, toxicology, ethnobotany and pharmacological properties of A. calamus for easy and better understanding of the outstanding medicinal potential of this very special plant and sirens for its conservation.

    ABSTRACT: Two new sulphur-containing metabolites, asterisulphoxide 1 and asterisulphone 2, together with six known compounds, coniferaldehyde 4, 4-hydroxy-2-methoxybenzaldehyde 3, methylcaffeate 5, isobutyrate 10-isobutyryloxy-8,9-epoxythymyle 6, 8,9-dihydroxy-10-isobutyryloxythymol 7 and 8-hydroxy-9,14-diisobutyryloxythymol 8, were isolated from Asteriscus maritimus roots. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic evidence and comparison with authentic samples. Compounds 1-8 were assessed for their in vitro antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas aureofasciens, Burkholderia glathei, Bacillus pumilus and their antifungal effects against Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger, Penicillium digitatum, Botrytis cinerea and Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici, using the disc diffusion method (20 μL/disc). A remarkable inhibition zone 10-15 mm of the growth of the bacterial and fungal agents was observed. The obtained results suggest that the isolated compounds could be promising abiotic antimicrobial agents.

    ABSTRACT: Eleven phenolic compounds, quercetin (1), quercetin 3-O-β-d-galactopyranoside (2), quercetin 3-O-(6″-O-galloyl)-β-d-galactopyranoside (3), quercetin 3-O-(6″-O-caffeoyl)-β-d-galactopyranoside (4), quercetin 3-O-β-d-glucopyranoside (5), rutin (6) quercetin 3-O-α-l-arabinopyranoside (7), quercetin 3-O-α-l-arabinofuranoside (8), protocatechulic acid (9), gallic acid (10) and chlorogenic acid (11), were isolated from the flowers of Aconogonon molle, a Nepalese medicinal plant. Structures of these compounds were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic methods. All these compounds were isolated for the first time from flowers, and five compounds (4, 5, 8, 9 and 11) were isolated for the first time from A. molle. All of these isolated compounds were evaluated for their in vitro antioxidant activity by using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical-scavenging method. Quercetin (1), quercetin glycosides (2-8) and gallic acid (10) exhibited potent antioxidant activity.

    ABSTRACT: The antimicrobial activity of five crude extracts (aqueous, methanol, ethyl acetate, acetone and methylene chloride) of the freshwater sponge Ochridaspongia rotunda (Arndt, 1937) was evaluated in vitro by using microdilution method against eight bacterial and eight fungal strains for the first time. The extracts were proven to be active in varying degrees against all the bacteria and fungi tested. O. rotunda methanol extract exhibited the highest antibacterial activity (minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) 7.5-15.0 μg/mL and minimum bactericidal concentration 15-30 μg/mL), while its acetone extract exhibited the most promising antifungal activity (MIC 7.5-45.0 μg/mL and minimum fungicidal concentration 15-60 μg/mL). The extracts were more effective against the bacteria and fungi screened compared with the positive controls (streptomycin and ampicillin for bacteria and bifonazole and ketoconazole for fungi, respectively). According to the experimental data obtained, this deepwater sponge species may be considered as a gold mine of new antimicrobial substances with significant and broad-range activity.

    ABSTRACT: We report the isolation of two known iridoid glucosides theviridoside (1) and theveside (2) from the aqueous extract of leaves of Cerbera odollam and semi-synthetic derivatisation of theveside prepared in a single step under protection group-free conditions. Derivatives 2a-j were evaluated for cytotoxicity towards five human cancer cell lines of different origins, namely SKBR3 (breast), HeLa (cervical), A375 (skin), HepG2 (liver) and HCT-116 (colon), and IC50 values were determined. Derivatives 2b and 2h exhibited moderate cytotoxicity against HCT-116 and A375 cell lines, respectively.

    ABSTRACT: This study was conceived to evaluate the essential fatty acids, secondary metabolites, antiradical and antimicrobial activities of unexploited Tunisian Ziziphus lotus L. The obtained results indicated that the major components of fatty acids were oleic acid (88.12%) and elaidic acid (7.88%). Leaves contained higher amount of total phenols, flavonoids and tannins than fruits, although both methanolic extracts had significant antioxidant activities. Significant correlations were observed between the total phenol or flavonoid contents in methanolic extracts and antioxidant activity estimated by using both 2,2'-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and 2,2'-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic radical-scavenging methods. In addition, both methanolic extracts exhibited strong antibacterial and antifungal activities. The inhibition zone diameters and the minimal inhibition concentration values were in the range of 10-17 mm and 3.1-50 mg/mL, respectively.

    ABSTRACT: To identify the most active antimicrobial fraction of Folium Syringae, four common pathogens were used in an in vitro screening. The results indicated that the combination of the 30% and 60% ethanol fraction (FSC) obtained from the water extraction was the most active fraction with a minimal inhibitory concentration of 0.65 mg mL(- 1). FSC was also found to be able to protect mice from a lethal infection of Staphylococcus aureus at clinical dosage (0.2 g kg(- 1)) with a survival rate of 83.3%. The antibacterial activity of FSC was then tested using the serum pharmacology method which revealed that FSC exhibits a more long-lasting activity than the positive control (levofloxacin hydrochloride). The main components were confirmed to be iridoid glycosides and flavones by HPLC-MS analysis.

    ABSTRACT: A new triterpenoid saponin (1) and a new oligosaccharide (2), together with three known saponins (3-5), have been isolated from n-BuOH extract of the fruits of Sapindus mukorossi Gaertn. The structures were elucidated using detailed analysis of one- and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance spectra along with their mass spectrometric data and the results of acid hydrolysis. Of the isolated compounds 1 and 3-5 displayed cytotoxic effects against human cancer cell lines in A-549 (lung carcinoma), MDA-231 (breast carcinoma) and PC-3 (prostatic carcinoma).

    ABSTRACT: Acutissimanide (1), a new lignin, together with 11 known polyphenols (2-12) were isolated from the bark of the deciduous oak tree, Quercus acutissima Carruth. The structure of compound 1 was determined using multidimensional (1)H and (13)C NMR and mass spectroscopy. The antioxidant properties of compounds 1-12 were investigated using a 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryhydrazyl radical-scavenging assay with compounds 6-11 displaying significant antioxidant activity (EC50 values of 5.2-23.7 μM). Our findings suggest the extracts of Q. acutissima Carruth are a potential source of natural antioxidant additives for use in the food and other allied industries.

    ABSTRACT: Walnut agroforestry systems have many ecological and economic benefits when intercropped with cool-season species. However, decomposing leaf litter is one of the main sources of allelochemicals in such systems. In this study, lettuce (Lactuca sativa var. angustata) was grown in the soil incorporated with walnut leaf litter to assess its allelopathic activity. Lettuce growth and physiological processes were inhibited by walnut leaf litter, especially during early growth stage (1-2 euphylla period) or with large amount of litter addition. The plants treated by small amount of leaf litter recovered their growth afterwards, while the inhibition for 180 g leaf litter persisted until harvest. Twenty-eight compounds were identified in the leaf litter, and several of them were reported to be phytotoxic, which may be responsible for the stress induced by walnut leaf litter. Thus, for highest economic value of vegetables such as lettuce, excessive incorporation of leaf litter should be discouraged.

    ABSTRACT: Two new bicyclic sesquiterpenes, namely 6α,9α-dihydroxycadinan-4-en-3-one (1) and guai-3-en-10α-ol (2), together with one known sesquiterpene were isolated from the stems of Kadsura heteroclita, which is a Tujia ethnomedicine called 'Xue Tong'. Their structures were elucidated by using spectroscopic analyses and by comparing the NMR data with those reported previously.

    ABSTRACT: Oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) is a widely used hydrogen atom transfer-based method which measures the antioxidant capacity of natural products. ORAC values of oleaster (Elaeagnus angustifolia L.), which was extracted with ethanol/acetone (7:3, v/v), ethanol/water (1:1, v/v) and methanol/water (1:1, v/v) in order to evaluate the effects of solvent type on antioxidant capacity, were examined. In general, results revealed that ethanol/water extracts exhibited better antioxidant capacity values. Furthermore, results obtained by using ORAC-eosin y (ORAC-EY), one of the widely used derivative of fluorescein (FL), as a fluorescent probe were compared with those obtained by using ORAC-FL. According to the results, ORAC-EY values were found to be compatible with ORAC-FL values.

    ABSTRACT: Harringtonine (HT) and homoharringtonine (HHT) are Cephalotaxus alkaloids with considerable antileukaemic activity. The objectives of this research were to (1) determine the content of HT and HHT present in Cephalotaxus griffithii needles alkaloid fraction (CGAF) and (2) compare the antiproliferative activity of CGAF, with that of HT and HHT on chronic myelogenous leukaemia K562 cell. The concentration of HT and HHT was found to be 122.14 and 16.79 mg/g of CGAF, respectively. Treatment of K562 cells with CGAF, HT and HHT decreased the viable cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Interestingly, the maximum cell death was found in CGAF, with IC50 value which was 3- to 4.6-fold lower than those of HT and HHT. Our results indicate that HT content in the needles of C. griffithii is higher than HHT, and alkaloids other than HT and HHT in CGAF are predominantly responsible for K562 cell death.

    ABSTRACT: Phytochemical investigation of the roots of Leea thorelii led to the isolation of nine compounds. Their structures were determined from spectroscopic data as bergenin (1), 11-O-acetyl bergenin (2), 11-O-(4'-O-methylgalloyl) bergenin (3), 3,5-dihydroxy-4-methoxybenzoic acid (4), ( - )-epicatechin (5), 4″-O-methyl-( - )-epicatechin gallate (6), ( - )-epicatechin gallate (7), microminutinin (8) and stigmasterol. Compounds 1-8 are reported for the first time from this plant, and this is also the first report of the presence of 1, 3, 4, 6 and 8 in the Vitaceae family.

    ABSTRACT: Tamarind leaves are edible; however, their saponin content could be toxic to human blood cells. In this article, the effect of tamarind leaf fluid extract (TFE) on human blood cells was evaluated by using several tests. Results revealed that TFE did not cause significant haemolysis on human red blood cells even at the lowest evaluated concentration (20 mg/mL). Blood protein denaturalisation ratio was consistently lower than in control at TFE concentrations greater than 40 mg/mL. Erythrocyte membrane damage caused by the action of oxidative H2O2 displayed a steady reduction with increasing TFE concentrations. In the reactive oxygen species (ROS) measurement by using flow cytometry assay, leucocyte viability was over 95% at tested concentrations, and a high ROS inhibition was also recorded. Protective behaviour found in TFE should be attributed to its polyphenol content. Thus, tamarind leaves can be regarded as a potential source of interesting phytochemicals.

    ABSTRACT: A simple and accurate HPLC-UV method was developed for simultaneous determination of seven constituents in Si-Ni-San decoction. Separation was performed on a Hypersil C18 column and detection was set with gradient wavelength at 240 nm (0-26 min) and 210 nm (26-30 min). The mobile phase consisted of 0.03% phosphoric acid in water (v/v), and acetonitrile was used with a flow rate of 1.0 (- 1). This method provides good linearity (r>0.9992), precision (RSD < 1.9%), repeatability (RSD < 2.9%), stability (RSD < 2.9%) and recovery (97.6-102.0%), which has been successfully applied to quantitative determination of the seven constituents in Si-Ni-San decoction and different compatibility groups.
