Article: Esthetic management of a primary double tooth using a silicone putty guide: a case report.
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: The term double tooth is often used to describe fusion and gemination. The development of isolated large or joined teeth is not rare, but the literature is confusing when the appropriate terminology is presented. The objective of this paper is to present a case of a primary double tooth in a 5-year-old girl with a history of trauma. The tooth was endodontically treated and esthetic management was carried out using a silicone putty guide.Journal of the California Dental Association 03/2013; 41(3):203-6. -

Article: Lateral wall sinus floor elevation for implant placement: revisiting fundamentals and the surgical technique.
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Sinus floor augmentation procedure is indicated to reconstruct the posterior maxilla with a sufficient amount of bone to allow for successful implant placement. This paper reviews the contemporary lateral wall technique, the related anatomy and some concepts and properties concerning graft materials currently available.Journal of the California Dental Association 03/2013; 41(3):185-7, 190-5. -
Article: Salivary biomarkers for caries risk assessment.
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Saliva contains various microbes and host biological components that could be used for caries risk assessment. This review focuses on the research topics that connect dental caries with saliva, including both the microbial and host components within saliva.Journal of the California Dental Association 02/2013; 41(2):107-9, 112-8. -

Article: Is dentistry going to get into the salivary diagnostics game or watch from the sidelines?
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: What is salivary diagnostics and why should you care? Most of us dentists try to avoid or control saliva as it interferes with access, or chemical interactions in dental materials, or impression materials, or when it is simply a nuisance. Periodically, we may note reduced flow or encounter a patient with xerostomia. Correspondingly, we then manage the reduced flow in an attempt to maintain homeostasis. However, with the discovery of salivary biomarkers, saliva is taking on a new role.Journal of the California Dental Association 02/2013; 41(2):125-31. -

Article: Commercial saliva collections tools.
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Saliva has been used as a specimen for diagnostics purposes for many years, but it has only been in the last 10 years that a number of new tools have been developed that promise to greatly increase the use of oral specimens for broad-based diagnosis and potentially screening applications. This article focuses on tools that are commercially viable or can play a role in whole saliva collection and future testing for critical diseases.Journal of the California Dental Association 02/2013; 41(2):97-9, 102-5. -
Article: Salivary biomarkers in the diagnosis of periodontal diseases.
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Periodontal diseases are considered some of the most prevalent diseases in the adult population, affecting as much as 80 percent of people. Diagnosis can be performed by measuring pocket depth and bleeding upon probing. These diseases can be easily addressed in their early stages, but many choose to ignore the signs and symptoms. Saliva has recently emerged as a potential tool to aid in the diagnosis of periodontal diseases and the prediction of treatment outcomes.Journal of the California Dental Association 02/2013; 41(2):119-24. -
Article: Young investigators and translational research.
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: In the December 2012 Journal of the California Dental Association, we displayed the talents of our dental students and their ability to perform basic research on topics ranging from how to improve wound healing to mechanisms for tumor identification and metastasis. The work of these young investigators assures us that future basic dental research will continue to provide a better understanding of oral biology. These clues would be useless without a cadre of dental investigators who can incorporate this information into strategies that can permit us to take better care of our patients. This month, we feature new and young investigators who are interested in translational research. This is the research of turning clinical observations, basic research findings and technological innovations into clinical strategies for taking care of our patients.Journal of the California Dental Association 01/2013; 41(1):28-30. -

Article: Mathematical filtering minimizes metallic halation of titanium implants in MicroCT images.
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Microcomputed tomography (MicroCT) images containing titanium implant suffer from x-rays scattering, artifact and the implant surface is critically affected by metallic halation. To improve the metallic halation artifact, a nonlinear Total Variation denoising algorithm such as Split Bregman algorithm was applied to the digital data set of MicroCT images. This study demonstrated that the use of a mathematical filter could successfully reduce metallic halation, facilitating the osseointegration evaluation at the bone implant interface in the reconstructed images.Journal of the California Dental Association 01/2013; 41(1):41-5. -
Article: Characterization of dental anatomy and gingival biotype in Asian populations.
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Gingival and dental characteristics are risk factors for periodontal problems. With short or fused roots, a decreased periodontium results in some attachment loss, compromising periodontal stability. Similarly, with an increased incidence of thin gingival biotype, inflammatory and traumatic insults may result in gingival recession. Anecdotally, Asian dentitions have been described as having short roots with "thin gingiva". This cross-sectional study will utilize clinical data and radiographic interpretation to ascertain whether this clinical impression is valid.Journal of the California Dental Association 01/2013; 41(1):31-3, 36-9.
