Article: An Unusual Presentation of Celiac Disease in a Middle Aged Man Treated for Hypertension – A Case Report
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Abstract: The authors describe a case of a middle aged man treated for hypertension admitted to hospital because of contractions of striated muscles. Other complaints of the patient were prolonged – frequent and loose stools and loss of weight. The causation of contractions of striated muscles was mineral imbalance that was considered to be caused by malabsorption. Specific serological tests and examination of biopsy of small intestine supported the diagnosis of celiac disease. During the hospitalization electrolytes were supplied and gluten-free diet was recommended to the patient and the treatment of hypertension was extended. The patient keeps gluten-free diet and he is almost asymptomatic, his body mass index has increased, his blood pressure is border line and biochemical and hematological laboratory findings became normal 2 years and 3 months after discharge from the hospitalization. The authors discuss gluten-free diet and dietary arrangements in hypocalcaemia, hypokalemia and hypomagnesaemia. In the authors’ opinion it can be difficult to establish the diagnosis of celiac disease, in this case report the diagnosis was established approximately 1 year after the emergence of symptoms and 7 months after the beginning of examination and it required a collaboration of many specialists.Gastroenterology Nursing 01/2012; -
