Closing date: 20 May 2013
This is a NIHR funded post-doctoral research associate post in the University of Cambridge Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, available until 31 March 2017 in the first instance.
The aim of the project is to characterise epigenetic regulatory mechanisms underlying pathological and physiological differences in the placenta. We have a unique collection of placental samples obtained from optimally phenotyped cases of human fetal growth restriction and matched controls from the same prospective cohort of 4500 women. The over-arching aim is to identify biomarkers for fetal growth restriction in the maternal blood. We have 17,000 stored serum and plasma samples from the same cohort, obtained serially through the pregnancy.
The work will involve analysis of samples of the placenta and serial plasma samples which have been collected and archived as part of the Women's Health theme of the NIHR Cambridge Comprehensive Biomedical Research Centre: see http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2393/8/51 for a detailed description of the study design.
The project will involve a range of laboratory methods, including high throughput sequencing. The project already has bioinformatics and statistical support and a further bioinformatics appointment is planned. The Department has other active projects using all of the proposed methodologies.
The project involves the potential for generation of new knowledge on the biological basis of intra-uterine growth restriction. It also has significant potential to generate novel biomarkers with potential clinical application.
