Job Description
The biotech and pharmaceutical (BP) industry discovers, develops, and manufactures products that require the analysis of large biological datasets and the computational simulation of complex
biological systems. Many areas of the BP industry are undergoing high growth in their use of computational analysis, modeling and simulation, due to an explosion in the availability of data and new
regulatory requirements. Examples include bioinformatic approaches to drug discovery driven by improvements in gene sequencing and expression array analysis; high-throughput methods in combinatorial
chemistry; increased pharmacokinetic modeling and simulation of clinical trials, driven by regulatory requirements; and wider application of statistical methods to ensure manufacturing quality.
The primary responsibility of this position is to assist sales personnel in managing the technical aspects of the sales process directed at customers working throughout the BP industry. The
Application Engineer is responsible for demonstrating his/her knowledge during customer meetings, conference calls, through the delivery of public seminars, and in the development of complex product
demonstrations. Application Engineers have the chance to create a large network within the company that facilitates their career at MathWorks.
Responsibilities
- Providing technical pre-sales support and guidance, primarily to the sales organization of MathWorks Germany, and secondly as a pan-European resource
- Working as a team, the Application Engineer assists the salesperson; firstly in understanding and synthesizing customer requirements, and secondly in explaining the features and capabilities of
our products relative to the customer’s specific needs.
- Preparing and delivering presentations to customers and prospects. These are delivered during customer meetings and during marketing seminars. These sessions include, but are not limited to live
software demonstrations and associated slide presentations.
- Analyzing users’ problems to determine and implement the best computational approach. Occasionally, customers who are preparing to acquire software require guidance on how to use evaluation
products.
- Developing demonstration programs, application examples, and simulation models. These are generally used as support for a sales call or to make a solution clear relative to an application support
assignment.
- Application Engineers at MathWorks are seen as key people to understand customer needs: giving feedback and direction to development is therefore an important part of the day-to-day work.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in a quantitative discipline such as Mathematics, Engineering or Physics, including strong components in statistics and mathematical modeling.
- Academic background that includes experience of applying quantitative methods in a biological context, such as Computational Biology, Systems Biology, or Pharmacokinetics would be a plus.
Industrial experience of applying quantitative methods in the biotech or pharmaceutical sector is a definite plus.
- Experience with MathWorks products such as MATLAB, Simulink and Statistics Toolbox, and also with other technical computing tools such as R, would be a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to perform computational analysis, modeling and simulation tasks, and ability to discuss how MathWorks products are used to solve scientific, engineering and business
problems.
- Interest in working directly with customers to help them understand how to apply MathWorks products to their problems.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, and fluency in both English and German.
Join us in accelerating the pace of discovery, innovation and learning in engineering and science. The MathWorks offers a dynamic professional environment, a commitment to lifelong learning, a
competitive package, and excellent work conditions.
