Occupational Summary
Perform a variety of technical duties involved in conducting standardized tests, experiments and determinations in support of ongoing biophysical research on insect flight muscle at Duke
University.
Position is full time (40 hr/week). Position is for one year only. Position may be renewed after one year depending on employee performance and lab funding.
Work Performed
- Conduct a variety of investigations in the planning, development and implementation of experimental procedures and specialized laboratory techniques in the analysis of structural dynamics and
stretch activation in insect flight muscle.
- Collect physiology data through observation, experimentation and various other methods, to include operating highly technical computer-driven muscle physiology apparatus and data acquisition
device.
- Prepare for and assist with X-ray diffraction experiments at synchrotron X-ray sources.
- Sort, create database for, and archive lab#s extensive library of photographs (electron micrographs).
- Prepare tissue and specimens for electron microscopy, and devise experimental techniques for tests and analyses.
- Evaluate and interpret collected data and prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.
- Confer with principal investigator in determining specific experiments to be included in the research protocol and to discuss the interpretation of results.
- Review selected journals, abstracts and scientific literature to keep abreast of new developments and to obtain information regarding previous experiments to aid in the design and development of
original procedures and techniques.
- Supervise, train and instruct residents, interns, students or lower level personnel in laboratory techniques and procedures.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Minimum Qualifications
Education
Work requires a bachelor's degree in botany, biology, zoology or other directly related scientific field.
Experience
Work requires two years of research experience. A related master's degree may offset required years of experience on a 1:1 basis, e.g., a two year master's degree in
lieu of two years of experience.
OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Skills
Specific skills not needed (will train), but experience with or classes in animal care, genetics, molecular biology, anatomy, and tropical biology are all helpful.
