SNC-Lavalin T & D has an exciting full time career opportunity for a Principal Engineer. Our Principal Engineer is responsible for electrical and P&C design packages and associated engineering studies for our high voltage substation projects.

The Principal Engineer is required to lead and supervise an engineering team to develop efficient and reliable electrical and P&C design packages for the high voltage substations. The incumbent will coordinate his/her design activities to maintain project schedules and ensure successful project completion. The incumbent will also assist the Estimating Team in preparation of conceptual designs, estimates and project proposals.

This is a senior position, accountable to lead and guide a group of electrical and P&C engineers to provide design activities in accordance with applicable codes and standards, including SNC-Lavalin’s policies and procedures, such as Safety, Environmental, Quality Assurance and Quality Control.

Additional accountabilities for the Principal Engineer include:
• Prepare conceptual design of the complex projects.
• Review, analyze and execute complex technical studies and project scopes.
• Carry out/review/analyze complex technical studies and project scopes
• Develop and review technical specifications, drawings and standards of equipment and projects.
• Lead multiple teams of engineers and manage their workload and assignments.
• Plan and manage mentoring and training of engineers in their group.
• Review the design basis memorandum, detailed engineering scope and guide the assigned discipline engineers to align the engineering deliverables according to project requirements.
• Guide and advise engineers in the delivery of accurate and thorough electrical design that will meet industry standards and specifications, and meet good engineering practices.
• Guide and advise engineers in maintaining complete project documentation with respect to engineering studies and calculations, all design packages, as-built requirements and return data information.
• Maintain good working relationships with internal groups that support the project.

Qualifications for the positions include:
• A degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized institution.
• A minimum of 18 years of relevant industry experience.
• P.E. Registration required.
• Knowledge of the modern power system, power system protection and transmission & distribution system.
• Strong knowledge of the transmission and distribution system, substation layouts and bus configurations.
• Strong knowledge of grounding and lightening shielding system, rigid and strain bus calculations.
• Experienced in sizing of major equipment and selection of substation material.
• Experience in developing and reviewing protection and control schematics for distance, differential, feeder over current and other common protections and major substation equipment.
• Experience in relay setting calculations and coordination is an asset.
• Experience on SVC, Series Compensation and/or HVDC converter stations is an asset.
• Experience with ASPEN and ETAP is an asset
• Strong client focus.
• A high level of interpersonal communication skills.
• Knowledge of North American codes and standards such as IEEE and ANSI including knowledge of NERC and FERC regulations.
